One of the most important things we teach about relationships is self-responsibility. Like many people, we spent most of our lives looking outside of ourselves for approval, blame, and fulfillment. And like most people who live that way, we rarely got what we wanted, and even when we did, we were never truly satisfied.

My path to Farm Aid began because of Jack Kerouac. In the late 1990s, the house where Kerouac lived when On the Road was published became a writers' residency. I spent this past summer there, where I met family farmers Kim Buchheit and Mike Robinson of Wiseacre Farm, who serve on the Kerouac Project's board of directors in addition to working as land surveyors and professional photographers.
